The Oaxaca Learning Center is a nonprofit organization in Mexico offering free academic teaching/learning services to students fourteen years and older. We assist students from low-income or impoverished urban families and from indigenous rural villages throughout the state of Oaxaca who have migrated to the capital city to complete their studies.
Students come to us to improve their performance in school and to find personal support and a much-needed sense of community. The staff and tutors, from the same social class as the students, are in charge of all aspects of program management. Many are previous beneficiaries of the Center.
The Center was founded in 2005 by Gary Titus, a retired community organizer from San Francisco, and Jaasiel Quero, a public school teacher in Oaxaca. They developed a unique and highly effective methodology combining academic tutoring, active coaching and mentoring that is modified and changes over time based on experience. Presently our Leadership Team and ten tutors provide 600 hours of tutoring per month.
Our goal is to assist each of our students in realizing academic, personal and leadership potential.
